Summer of 2015: 4th of July Wine Tasting

Florida and Las Vegas have at least two things in common: (1) the summers are so hot you have to hibernate inside and (2) the touristy places are super busy on holidays. What this means is that you can go stir crazy during the summer and holidays and run out of ideas for things to do.

So by the time Sunday morning rolled around, after 2 days of a 3-day weekend, we needed to get out of the house. We considered risking the Strip and going out for brunch but then decided a quiet, relaxing drive through the desert and wine tasting at Pahrump Valley Winery would be our preferred choice.

It was pretty quiet at the winery, about a 50-minute drive from our house, and we bellied up to the tasting bar and chose our own complementary 7 wines from the wine list. Rich’s list was slightly different from mine (he prefers all reds) but there is one particular white I enjoy here.

Rich’s favorite was the Merlot and I have to agree – it was one of the best Merlots I’ve ever tasted. All of these wines, except for the Primitivo, are made from California grapes. Besides the Merlot, I was also attracted to the Viognier (a very interesting white) and Primitivo (a Nevada wine made from Italian grapes similar to a Zinfandel, although much lighter) – she thought it would go well with a salad and I thought perhaps even a meat sauce.

We had great timing because as soon as we were finished with the tasting, the restaurant was ready to serve lunch. We’ve had lunch here several times and it never disappoints – it’s as good as any nice restaurant anywhere.

The meal was delicious and on our way back to the car, we stopped to admire the vineyard and pine trees – what a treat in the middle of the desert.
On the drive back home, over the slight elevation, we ran into a bit of a T-storm, and the temperature dropped from 100 to 75 – what a delight! It was brief but we enjoyed every second of it.
